Social History Online is a multilingual jounral published under the auspices of the University Press Duisburg-Essen. Its coordinating editors, Peter Birke and Max Henninger, work with nine thematic editors to publish German, English, and French essays on historical and historiographical issues.
Social History Online developed out of the journals 1999 (1986-2003) and Sozial.Geschichte (2003-2008).
In 1986, the editors of 1999 were concerned mainly with examining the social, economic, scientific and discursive realities of the fascist era and their aftermath. The journal made a significant contribution to our understanding of these realities and its approach has become well established within the scientific community. The time has come to move on and devote more space to approaches that can help us move beyond a eurocentric perspective and comprehend the global transformations and crises of the present.
Social History Online considers itself a forum for critical and socially and politically committed scholars.
Issues of Social History Online scheduled for 2010 will focus on the historiographical approach of Peter Linebaugh and Marcus Rediker ("The Many-Headed Hydra") and on social struggles in the city.
